Lady Raiders Dominate TCU to Open Big 12 Play

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team opened Big 12 play in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, handling TCU, 6-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The Lady Raiders (7-1, 1-0 Big 12) have now won five-straight matches dating back to Feb. 7. That stretch includes three sweeps, a 4-3 win over No. 23 Arizona State and Saturday's 6-1 win over the Horned Frogs.

The match began with a tight doubles point that ended up going to the Lady Raiders after wins on courts one and three. Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines struck first, notching a 6-3 win over Isabel Pascual and Mercedes Aristegui. After the Horned Frogs came back for a 6-4 win on court two, Olivia Peet and Metka Komac snagged the win on three, holding off Margaret Polk and Stevie Kennedy, 7-5, to put the Lady Raiders up, 1-0.

Texas Tech would get straight-set wins from five of its six singles players to quickly dispatch of the Horned Frogs, and had the match clinched at 4-0 before TCU got on the board.

Lisa Mays earned the first Lady Raider singles victory of the day, tallying a dominant, 6-0, 6-1 victory over No. 68 Marie Norris on court one. It marked the first ranked win of the season for Mays, who moved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in dual matches with the win.

Komac quickly followed with a win on six to put Tech up, 3-0. The freshman defeated Margaret Polk, 6-4, 6-0, for her fourth dual win in as many starts this season.

Margarita Skriabina also remained perfect in dual singles action this season, moving to 5-0 this spring with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Stevie Kennedy to clinch the match for the Lady Raiders.

After the match was clinched, TCU earned its first point of the match with a win on two; however, the Lady Raiders were quick to finish the win with wins from Nell Miller and Olivia Peet to finish off the victory. Miller moved to 5-2 on the dual season with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Isabel Pascual, and Olivia Peet moved to 5-0 on the dual season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Addy Guevara.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Friday at 10 a.m. when they travel to Norman, Okla., to face the Sooners in a nonconference match.
