LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team opens Big 12 play this weekend as it travels to face Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The squad opens the weekend in Stillwater, Okla., against No. 12 Oklahoma State on Friday at 6 p.m., then heads to Norman on Sunday to face Oklahoma at 2 p.m.
Â
ABOUT THE LADY RAIDERS
Texas Tech is coming off its biggest win of the season so far last weekend, knocking off then-No. 26 Arizona State, 4-3, in Tempe. The Lady Raiders have won two-straight matches, beginning with a 4-1 win at TCU on Feb. 23.
Â
Tech is led by a couple of Lady Raiders who are already up to double-digit singles wins this season: Nell Miller with 13—8-2 in dual play—and Olivia Peet with 10. Freshman Margarita Skriabina is also riding into conference play on a five-match win streak having played matches at each of the top four singles positions.
Â
IN THE RANKINGS
For the first time this season, Texas Tech is in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings at No. 42. Freshman Margarita Skriabina remained in the ITA singles poll at No. 114 and Lisa Mays and Nell Miller are ranked in doubles at No. 75.
Â
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Oklahoma State comes in at No. 12 in the ITA team rankings released this week and are 9-1 after a 4-2 win over No. 30 South Carolina on the road last weekend. The Cowgirls have won four straight since their only loss of the season—a 4-3 loss against No. 25 Ohio State at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. OSU has a number of ranked players, led by No. 23 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat in singles, who also ranks No. 5 in doubles with Ayumi Miyamoto.
Â
ABOUT THE SOONERS
Oklahoma enters the weekend at 5-3 coming off a pair of consecutive road wins at Purdue and Illinois. All three of the Sooners' losses have come to ranked opponents in No. 21 Florida, No. 11 Pepperdine and No. 29 Texas A&M. OU is led by No. 76 Martina Cappuro in singles—the Sooners' only ranked singles player—and the 17th ranked doubles team of Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili.
Â
MILLER NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lady Raider tennis sophomore Nell Miller has been named Big 12 Women's Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
Miller was key to the Lady Raiders' upset of No. 26 Arizona State last Saturday, knocking off No. 91 Savannah Slaysman in straight sets to help Texas Tech come back to knock off the Sun Devils for Tech's first ranked win of the season.
Â
Miller tallied the first singles win of the match to tie the match after the team dropped a tightly-contested doubles point. It was the first of four singles wins for the Lady Raiders in the 4-3 win. The victory marked Miller's first ranked singles win of the spring season and moved her to 8-2 in dual action.
Â
The selection marks Miller's first career Big 12 weekly honor.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD
After this weekend's trip, the Lady Raiders continue their Big 12 road trip next weekend at Iowa State (March 13) and West Virginia (March 15).
