NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball got back on the right track with a strong offensive attack, giving the Red Raiders a 3-0 sweep of Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at the SFA Invitational.
The Red Raiders claimed the first set, 25-14, the second set 25-12 and closed out the match with a 25-15 set three victory. Tech finished with an attack percentage of .486, which ranks No. 8 all-time in school history.
"This was a fairly important statement to ourselves about how we want to play with zeal and energy," head coach Don Flora said.
Sporting a new lineup featuring Victoria Hinneburg, Marguerite Grubb, Lauren Douglass, Reyn Akiu, Katy Keenan, Meghan Stacy and Carlie Foust (LIB), the Red Raiders put together a stellar first set on the attack. Tech recorded an attack percentage of .800 in set one, with Stacy posting five kills. Tech also went 13-15 (86 percent) on sideout attempts in the first set.
Stacy and Keenan led the team in kills, putting up double-digit and season-high figures of 11 and 10, respectively.
The Red Raiders didn't let up in the second set, opening on an 8-0 run to set the tone early and closing on a 5-0 run to seal the 25-12 set two win. The Red Raiders tallied 15 kills in the second set, as freshman Sarah Redding notched four kills. She would finish with seven.
Grubb dished out 34 assists over the three-set match. Her efforts resulted in 42 team kills, with five different Red Raiders putting up five or more kills.
"The staff was pleased with our efficiency offensively," Flora said. "This was a good sign of Marguerite delivering some balls to people at the correct times."
The third set ended the same way the second one did, on a 5-0 Texas Tech swing, with kills coming from Stacy and Ybanez. Douglass and Redding would finish with eight and seven kills, respectively, while Ybanez totaled five.
It was the fourth time this season that the Red Raiders have held their opponents to an attack percentage below .100, keeping Northeastern at .095. Foust (nine) led the team in digs, while Grubb and Morgan each tallied seven. Tech also notched six team blocks, with Keenan putting up five on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Raiders return for the final game of the SFA Invitational at 5 p.m. on Saturday against South Dakota State.
