LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 8 Texas Tech sits in 26th place overall with a team total of 304 following the first round of play on Friday at the 2015 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
No. 4 Illinois leads the field with a 2-under-286 followed by Georgia in second and 13th-ranked Southern California in third with a total of 289.
"I think we played good enough, however, we did not score well," head coach Greg Sands said. "But I do think we played well enough to do so unfortunately the score does not reflect that. But you know, that's golf sometimes. To be a champion, you have to battle back from some bad scores. I think the golf is there, just hopefully the scoring is there tomorrow."
Clement Sordet carded a 74 for the first 18 holes to lead the Red Raiders in a tie for 54th place individually. The senior played even par through the first six holes before finishing with three birdies for the round.
Sophomore Hannes Ronneblad finished the day at 4-over while teammates Matias Dominguez and Wes Artac dropped nine birdies together and both are now tied for 98th place with a 5-over 77.
No. 7 Stanford trails Texas Tech by six strokes in 29th place and Big 12 foe Oklahoma wrapped up the field at 24-over and eight strokes behind the Red Raiders.
The second round is set to begin on Saturday with Texas Tech teeing off at 7:50am ET alongside LSU and Oregon.
Saturday will be the second of three rounds of stroke play, after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined after 54 holes of play. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday to determine the top eight teams advancing into match play on Tuesday. The team national champion will be decided by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday, followed by the finals on Wednesday.
The Golf Channel will televise over 10 hours of live coverage from The Concession Golf Club beginning on Monday.
