Red Raiders to play for Big 12 Match Play co-championship
October 13, 2026 | Men's Golf
SALT LAKE CITY — Texas Tech will play for a share of the Big 12 Match Play title Wednesday after weather forced a change to the tournament format Tuesday night. With team travel obligations Wednesday afternoon, the fifth round has been canceled, and the fourth-round matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT to determine the co-champions.
The Red Raiders, the tournament's No. 2 seed, won Pool B on Tuesday to advance to the championship round, where they will face Arizona State, the Pool C winner. Oklahoma State, the Pool A winner, will face West Virginia, the Pool D winner, in the other match. The winners of the two matches will be declared co-champions.
Texas Tech completed its suspended second-round pool play match against No. 10 Kansas State Tuesday morning, finishing in a 2.5-2.5 tie before defeating No. 7 Colorado, 3-2, in its third-round pool play match Tuesday afternoon. The fourth-round bracket play match was postponed due to weather.
The Kansas State match resumed at 7:45 a.m. MT after being suspended Monday night due to darkness with the teams tied at 2.5 points. Adam Bresnu had already secured a 2&1 victory, while the other four matches remained in progress.
Tim Wiedemeyer went on to defeat Octavio Laurent, 2-UP, while Ben Gregg earned a tie against Ville Virkkala by making an eagle on the final hole of their match. Alvaro Pastor fell 1-UP to Fionn Dobbin after the two tied the second-to-last hole before Dobbin birdied the final hole and Pastor made par. Simon Hovdal fell 3&1 to Erik Holmberg.
In the 3-2 victory over Colorado, Pastor bounced back with a dominant 6&4 win over Ty Holbrook, securing the first point for the Red Raiders after just 14 holes. Bresnu defeated Brandon Knight, 3&2, while Wiedemeyer earned a 2-UP victory over Parker Paxton.
Hovdal fell 3&2 to Asher Whitaker, while Gregg was edged by Colt Farrow, 1-UP, after the match came down to the final hole.
The 2026 Big 12 Fall Match Play marks the seventh edition of the tournament. First played in 2019, the event was held annually until it was suspended last season before returning this year. Texas Tech won the inaugural tournament in 2019 and claimed its second title in 2022. The Red Raiders will look to add a third championship Wednesday as they compete for a share of this year's title.
