Bresnu wins Ben Hogan Collegiate, earns PGA exemption

FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Tech senior Adam Bresnu captured his first Division I individual title Tuesday, winning the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club. The victory also earned Bresnu an exemption into the 2027 PGA TOUR Charles Schwab Challenge.
"It feels amazing, an unbelievable feeling right now," said Bresnu. "I had two putts to win, and I couldn't feel my hands on the first putt, and I had a tap-in on the second, and I'm glad I made it. Coach Sands was with me the whole tournament. He helped me a lot, golf-wise and mentally. I'm really glad he was there with me today."
Bresnu finished atop the 80-player field at 7-under 203, shooting 3-under 67 in the final round to win by one stroke over Georgia's JD Culbreth. Bresnu opened his final round with a birdie on No. 1 before a bogey on No. 3 dropped him back to even for the round. He regained the lead with a stretch of three consecutive birdies on Nos. 8-10 before closing with eight straight pars to secure the victory. Bresnu finished as one of just seven players in the field to finish under par.
"I was happy to shoot under par every round here because the course is really tough and probably one of the toughest on the PGA TOUR," Bresnu said. "It was a really good feeling to hit a lot of fairways and greens. Unbelievable place and unbelievable city; super happy, it was my first D-I win, so super proud right now."
Bresnu opened the tournament Monday with rounds of 1-under 69 and 3-under 67 to take a share of the lead after 36 holes.
Guided by Bresnu's individual victory, the No. 5 Red Raiders finished tied for third at 12-over 852 in the 16-team field, which featured 14 top-25 programs. Texas Tech carded a 5-over 285 in the final round to finish tied with No. 14 North Carolina.
No. 11 Alabama won the team title at even-par 840, while No. 1 Auburn finished second at 5-over 845. No. 8 Texas and No. 10 Vanderbilt tied for fifth at 14-over 854.
Ben Gregg, who opened the Red Raiders' first two tournaments of the season with a victory and a runner-up finish, continued his strong start to the season with a tie for 16th at 3-over 213 behind rounds of 73-69-71.
Tim Wiedemeyer finished tied for 32nd at 7-over 217 after rounds of 74-69-74, while Connor Graham and Simon Hovdal tied for 57th at 12-over 222. Graham carded rounds of 72-77-73, while Hovdal finished with rounds of 74-74-74.
The Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational marks the final stroke-play tournament of Texas Tech's fall schedule. The Red Raiders will complete their fall season at the Big 12 Match Play, Oct. 12-13, at the Salt Lake City Country Club in Salt Lake City, Utah.
