BRADENTON, Fla. - The Red Raiders wrapped up the second day of competition at The Concession Golf Club on Saturday afternoon as the Red Raiders finished 17-over and in 27th place overall heading into Sunday's crucial third round.
"I thought overall the conditions were a little bit easier starting out in the morning, head coach Greg Sands said. "Just kind of an overall frustrating day for the guys. I think they lost a little bit of patience and that snowballed on them and the score reflected that."
Freshman Wes Artac turned in his best round of the Championship thus far as he carded a 3-over-75. The Kingwood, Texas native dropped three birdies on the back nine, including back-to-back on holes 12 and 13, en route to the team-leading round.
Clement Sordet, Matias Dominguez and Hannes Ronneblad all finished with a 77 on Saturday as the course lived up to its tough and separating layout.
The top three spots on the leaderboard saw little change on Saturday as No. 13 Southern California took a three stroke lead ahead of No. 4 Illinois and seven in front of 33rd Georgia.
The third round is set to begin on Sunday after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday to determine the top eight teams advancing into match play on Tuesday.
Tech currently sits 16 shots back of the top 15.
"I think we've got to put together an almost perfect round," Sands said. "Maybe not perfect all the way around, but certainly need to play pretty good."
The team national champion will be decided by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday, followed by the finals on Wednesday. The Golf Channel will televise over 10 hours of live coverage from The Concession Golf Club beginning on Monday.
