LUBBOCK, Texas - The mojo was working Sunday afternoon, as No. 29 Texas Tech cruised past No. 32 Rice, 4-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
It was more than just another victory for Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty, who recorded his 99th career win, as the Lady Raiders improved to 4-2 on the season. Rice leads the all-time series, 15-10, but Texas Tech has won each of the last four matches.
Petty is the fastest coach to reach 99 career wins in Lady Raider Tennis. Petty recorded his 99th win in his 157th matches. That eclipses the mark by Mickey Bowes, who had 99 wins in 159 matches, from 1979-89.
Hortense Boscher and Gabriela Talaba def. Savannah Durkin and Solomiya Zinko, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles to start the day. The duo finished just seconds ahead of Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici, who toppled Alison Ho and Lindsey Hodge, 6-4, at No. 2, earning Texas Tech the first point of the day.
At No. 1, the match between Kenna Kilgo and Sarah Dvorak of Tech and Natalie Beazant and Katherine Ip of Rice, was abandoned with the match knotted at 5-5.
Beazant, who is ranked No. 24 nationally, tied the match with a straight-set win over Kilgo, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1. Beazant, a senior from England, finished her career 9-0 against Texas Tech, having defeated Elizabeth Ullathorne, Samantha Adams, Nikki Sanders, Rashmi Teltumbde, Sandra Dynka and Kilgo.
Talaba played her best match of the year, as her serve was near perfect. She finished the match with just two double faults. The freshman from Romania bested Hodge, 6-2, 6-1, to give Texas Tech a 2-1 lead.
No. 35 Kiro then rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Savannah Durkin at No. 3, giving the Lady Raiders a 3-1 lead. Katelyn Jackson then secured the final point and the win with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win over Zinko at No. 6.
No. 89 Dvorak abandoned her match at No. 2 despite leading 7-6 (7-1), 2-1 over Ip, while Federici was leading Ho, 7-5, 4-1.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Thursday, when they host No. 58 Memphis at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the McLeod Tennis Center. Smith will go for the win against long-time friend and former Lady Raider associate head coach Hayden Perez, who is the head coach at Memphis.
