Tech (6-2) won its sixth straight home game and equaled its win total from the 2013-14 season despite shooting 34 percent from the field (17 of 50) and not making a 3-pointer (0 of 14). It was the first time the Lady Raiders were held without a trey since the last time these two teams met on Nov. 10, 2013 (0 of 8).
"Rough game back," head coach Candi Whitaker said. "Not real happy with how we played on either end ... But happy we could get a win. We have to be much better and we know that."
UTPA (6-6) shot out to a 7-2 lead after the first media timeout before Tech started coming alive with its game in the paint through Olabode and senior Kelsi Baker. Tech went on a 14-6 run to take a 16-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening half, but could manage only two points before the break to make it 18-18. It was Tech's lowest point total for any half this season.
The Lady Raiders never trailed by more than two points after the break and hit 14 of 19 from the free-throw line after the break to help seal the eight-point win.
"The second half was good," Whitaker said. "We got them into foul trouble so early in the second half and were in the bonus. We did a much better job taking advantage there."
Tech will now wait until Friday for its next game when the Lady Raiders host Nicholls (5:30 p.m., Friday), UTSA (2 p.m., Saturday) and Houston (2 p.m., Sunday) in the Athletes in Action Tournament at the USA.
