LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Rayven Brooks scored 16 points to lead five players in double digits as Tech blew past Nicholls, 76-49 on Friday in the second game of the Athletes in Action Classic.
Houston edged out UTSA in the opening game, 56-53. Houston will take on Nicholls at noon on Saturday while UTSA plays Tech at 2 p.m.
Minta Spears scored 14 points - all in the first half - while Amber Battle and Ivonne CookTaylor chipped in 12 each to go with 13 points from reigning Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week, Dayo Olabode.
Tech (7-2) shot out to a 32-13 lead midway through the first half thanks in part to a 20-4 run capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Spears. Spears hit four of Tech's 11 treys on Friday. The Lady Raiders were 11 of 25 behind the arc (44 percent) - the most 3-pointers by a Tech team since hitting 13 of 25 against Oklahoma State in 2010.
Nicholls (3-5) got within striking distance of tying the game twice thanks to a pair of 7-0 runs before Tech blew the game open in the second half, despite 22 turnovers. CookTaylor, Olabode and Brooks also got involved in the outside game, hitting at least two apiece. Olabode went 5 of 6 from the field and 3 of 4 from outside. She made only one 3-pointer in the previous eight games.
