Red Team Evens Series with Game 2 Win

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Team used eight straight scoreless innings from three pitchers while tying the Texas Tech baseball Red & Black Series at a game a piece with a 3-1 victory over the Black Team on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Team also had seven players with a base hit, including sophomore right fielder Anthony Lyons who drove in a run and went 2-for-4. Red Team starting pitcher Jacob Patterson (1-0) earned the win going three innings allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Black Team starting pitcher Johnathon Tripp (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk in three innings.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Jackson Lancaster picked up the save pitching two scoreless innings without allowing a base hit.
The Black Team jumped out to a lead in the top of the first on junior outfielder Quinn Carpenter's RBI double as sophomore outfielder Hunter Hargrove, who reached on a walk, came around to score.
The Red Team answered immediately as they not only tied the game but took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Junior center fielder Zach Davis started the Red Team half of the first with an infield hit and then stole second base. Sophomore left fielder William Hairston drove in Davis with an RBI single through the left side to tie the score, 1-1. A batter later, Hairston scored to give the Red Team the lead for good on sophomore right fielder Anthony Lyons' RBI single to center field.
Patterson, meanwhile, retired six straight batters and allowed just one base runner over his final two innings on the mound.
The Red Team bullpen did the rest as senior right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno tallied four scoreless innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts and a walk and Lancaster who pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Zach Davis went 1-for-2 with a run scored, stolen base and walk, Lyons went 2-for-4 with a run scored, stolen base and RBI and Nick Marshall went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Black Team was led by shortstop Cory Raley (2-for-4, stolen base) and also received a solid performance from reliever Corey Taylor (3.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H).
The Red & Black Series will continue with Game 3 set for Tuesday, Oct. 28 with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. All games of the series will be played at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park and admission is free.
