LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech raced out to an early two-set lead and held on to defeat Morehead State, 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 32-30), Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Texas Tech Invitational at the United Spirit Arena.
The win marked Tech's (5-1) fifth-straight, extending a winning streak that is the program's longest since early into the 2006 season.
The Red Raiders also claimed the Texas Tech Invitational crown with the win as only UNLV and Tech went undefeated on the weekend. Tech claimed the tournament crown via tiebreaker as the Red Raiders played in the fewer sets than the Rebels.
"It's a fantastic weekend anytime you can go 3-0," head coach Don Flora said following the match. "I thought this really taught our team had to stay focused and battle point-for-point. This is the type of match that lets you know that you can go toe-to-toe with anybody."
Following four-straight matches where Tech cruised to 3-0 wins, the Red Raiders faced their first set of adversity since the season opener at TCU as Morehead State attempted to come from two sets down to force a fifth and final set.
After the Eagles took the final three points to win the third set, Morehead State went back-and-forth with the Red Raiders as the two teams traded kills until Breeann David nailed back-to-back kills to close the match with Tech holding a 32-30 advantage.
Tech had three players with double-digit kills as Miara Cave led the way with 15 while Amanda Dowdy and David added 14 and 12, respectively. Setter Karlyn Meyers continued her trend of distributing across the floor, finishing with a season-high 44 assists to go along with seven kills, one shy of her career high.
Dowdy continued her double-double trend as she also posted a career-high 23 digs to go along with three block assists. Tory Vaughan also added a career-high 21 digs from the libero position.
The match marked the end of a three-match homestand for Tech as the Red Raiders will not return to the United Spirit Arena until its Big 12 Conference opener Sept. 24 against Iowa State.
The Red Raiders will take two days off before returning to the court Tuesday evening at Texas-Pan American. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Edinbug.
