Weekend Preview with Coach Hays
LUBBOCK, Texas - For the first time this fall, the Texas Tech softball team will hit the diamond Saturday to face an opponent besides itself as the Red Raiders host Western Texas College and Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders begin the day with a 10 a.m. first pitch against Western Texas College before turning around and immediately playing Eastern New Mexico at noon. Tech began fall practices a few weeks ago and has conducted several intersquad scrimmages in that time.
Coming off one of its best seasons in program history, second-year head coach Shanon Hays returns 15 letterwinners this fall, including All-Big 12 second team selections Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, from his 2009 squad that finished 38-18 overall after falling to Hawaii in the finals of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Tech's 38 victories were the second-most in program history.
In the offseason, Hays added seven newcomers to his roster, six of which that will be in uniform Saturday in Cydney Allen, Kelsey Dennis, Berkley Fuller, Taylor Powell, Brittany Talley, and Kermitria Ward. The group will look to replace departed seniors Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and ace pitcher Ashly Jacobs, who, as a trio, helped lead Tech to a 23-win turnaround from a year ago.
Tech will play a total of eight exhibition games in the month of October with all eight being played at Rocky Johnson Field.
