LAWRENCE, Kan. - Texas Tech (35-12, 7-8) got timely hitting and good pitching to secure two wins today, a 4-2 win from the resumption of last night's rain delay and then a 4-1 win in game two.
The Jayhawks actually took the lead in the first inning on a pair of hits and an error, but the Red Raiders came back with two in the third on a run-scoring hit by Mikey Kenney, who then came around later in the inning to score on a wild pitch. Tech tacked on two in the fifth when Emily Bledsoe doubled with one out. Logan Hall drew a walk and both runners advanced on Raven Richardson's ground ball. With two outs, Stephanie Drewry singled scoring both Bledsoe and Hall.
It was all Tech starter, Karli Merlich, would need as the sophomore scattered seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts to improve to 11-2 on the season.
The Red Raiders currently sit in sixth in the Big 12 with their 7-8 record, but could move as high as fifth by day's end as other games are in progress. The conference representative in the postseason is the Big 12 tournament winner, but at large berths into the NCAA regionals are possible and the conference sent seven teams to the tournament in 2009.
Tech next hosts No. 14 Texas on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field. The Longhorns and No. 7 Oklahoma State split their series this weekend are in a dogfight with each other for the regular-season Big 12 championship.
