LUBBOCK, Texas - With the skies around Lubbock flashing, Texas Tech got power and good pitching to sweep the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowgirls and improve to 33-12, 5-8. The Cowgirls, who were undefeated in Big 12 play heading into the two games, fall to 40-9, 9-2.
Ashly Jacobs (12-5) got the win in a 6-0 game one which featured a booming home run by freshman Mikey Kenney. It was Kenney's 15th blast of the season and ties the Tech all-time record for home runs in a season. Karli Merlich came on to pitch a strong four and a third inning and pick up the win, 4-1, in game two to improve to 10-2 on the year. Logan Hall hit her fourth home run of the season to highlight the offense. Her blast, which bounced off the top of the scoreboard, resembled a scene from a movie when lightning flashed behind the ball. (The Natural, and if you haven't seen it, you should!)
Other offensive highlights for Tech include singles by Leah Legler, Raven Richardson and McKenzie Clemmons in game one. Stephanie Drewry hit a pair of singles, Emily Bledsoe drove in two and had two hits and Mikey Kenney doubled and scored in game two.
Tech heads to Kansas for a weekend series with the Jayhawks on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at Noon, and the pair of wins this evening move them into seventh place in the Big 12.
