LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team (18-23, 1-9) hits the road, this time by luxury bus, to take on No. 23 Texas (29-15, 4-8) in an April 26 doubleheader and No. 6 Texas A&M (37-7, 10-4) on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, in the hopes to turn things around as the Big 12 regular season heads to a close. For Tech, with six games remaining and the bunch packed in the middle (see http://www.big12sports.com/sports/w-softbl/big12-w-softbl-body.html) the opportunity to move up exists, but the challenge is great.
Jennifer Corkin picked a good time to get hot, as the junior first baseman/designated player, had a multi-homer game vs. Kansas and managed the team's only hit in the other Kansas game. And, Sarah Losleben has pitched extremely well of late, but, as Coach Wilson said, "It's time to put it all together again for a consecutive seven innings."
The Red Raiders' Ashley Parker ranks 41st nationally in stolen bases with 21, or a .51 per-game average and the team ranks 39th nationally with a 1.54 SB per-game clip. Additionally, Tech is 24th in double plays with a .41 per-game mark.
Texas is on an uncharacteristic 4-game losing skid and is the unfamiliar position of being in the middle of the Big 12 pack. Led by Shannon Thomas (.333 avg.) and Tallie Thrasher (.322 avg. 12 HR), the Longhorns have a .264 team batting average. Erin Tresselt (9-2, 1.25 ERA) and Meagan Denny (18-12, 1.56 ERA) handle most of the pitching duties for the Longhorns.
The Aggies are led by Megan Gibson (.400 avg. 10 HR) and Sharonda McDonald (.361 avg., 31 SB) and have a team .282 average. Amanda Scarborough (19-4, 0.97 ERA) and Megan Gibson (15-3, 1.50) form the nucleus of a pitching staff as good as any in the nation. (Note that Saturday's game time with the Aggies is 1 p.m.)
