AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Tech got off to strong starts early in each game, but it was not enough to upset one of the nation's hottest teams, No. 3 Texas, in a 3-0 (30-14, 30-15 and 30-24) loss Wednesday night in the Gregory Gym.
With the loss, Tech fell to 7-20, 1-17. UT won its 17th consecutive match to improve to 21-3 and 16-1 in conference play.
Amy Gandy and Michelle Flores led a very balanced Tech effort with five kills apiece. Alicia Ostmeyer and Brandi Hood added four kills each, while Gandy and Brandi Hood led the way defensively with three blocks apiece.
The Red Raiders came out firing early and took a 4-1 lead behind a block assist from Gandy and Flores. The Longhorns came roaring back with a huge run to go ahead 12-7. UT kept its fire going and hit .433 for the game to take the win at 30-14.
Tech came out strong at the outset of game two and was within 4-3 early. The Longhorns came back with a 10-3 run to go up 14-6. UT's hot hitting continued as it took game two 30-15.
Coming out of the locker room, the Red Raiders stood strong early and were tied at 7-7 early on. Tech kept a strong attack going and took a 13-12 lead on a kill from Flores. A block from Hood put the Red Raiders up 17-15 a short time later. UT came firing back to take a 21-19 lead. Tech pushed hard, but the Longhorns' strong hitting was just enough to give them the 30-24 win and the sweep.
Destinee Hooker led two Texas players with double-digit kills as she knocked down 14 to go with 10 digs and finish with a double-double. Freshman Juliann Faucette added 10 kills.
Tech will have the conference's bye Saturday before returning to the United Spirit Arena for its last home match, senior night, against the Kansas Jayhawks. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
