LUBBOCK, Texas - Four Tech seniors were honored as part of senior night ceremonies Wednesday, but Kansas put a damper on the evening's festivities with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-21 and 30-23) defeat of the Red Raiders. Seniors Amy Gandy, Lindsey Louis, Alicia Ostmeyer and Emily Ziegler all made their final appearances in the United Spirit Arena with Gandy and Ostmeyer knocking down double-digit kills to lead the way.
Tech out dug Kansas 41-39 on the evening, but Kansas outhit the Red Raiders .333 to .152 to make the difference in the match. The Red Raiders fell to 7-21, 1-18 on the season, while the Jayhawks finished off their year with a 13-17, 6-14 mark.
Gandy led Tech with 13 kills on .414 hitting while adding five digs, four blocks and three assists to her totals. Ostmeyer knocked down 10 kills on .304 hitting to along with four blocks. Sophomore Jenn Harrell picked up 16 digs and tied a career-best four aces from her libero position. Her 16 digs moved her into 12th place for the most digs in a single season in school history.
Both squads came out strong in game one and battled one another tooth and nail. Neither squad managed more than a one-point advantage until Ostmeyer knocked down a pair of kills to spark a 4-0 run and the Red Raiders a 15-11 lead midway through. The Jayhawks caught fire and stormed back to tie the match. Once again both squads battled back and forth. Tech tied the action at 28 apiece late on a Kanas attack error, but the Jayhawks rebounded to take the final two points to take the game 30-28.
The back-and-forth battle resumed at the start of the second game. Kansas made a small run to go ahead 13-9, only to see the Red Raiders come back and take a 16-14 advantage halfway through. The Jayhawks took advantage of some Tech hitting woes at that point to take a 24-17 lead and seize control of the game. They finished off the game with the 30-21 win.
It was almost all Kansas at the start of the third game, as the Jayhawks raced out to a 12-5 lead early. Tech was not done, however, as it surged back to cut the deficit to 21-18 on a kill from Harrell nearly two-thirds of the way through. Kansas' hitting came alive at that point as it went on a huge 5-1 run to take back the momentum. The Jayhawks withheld a late Tech run to take the 30-23 win.
Kansas' Emily Brown, one of the Big 12's most versatile players, finished with her eighth triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 26 assists and 13 digs in addition to four blocks. Teammate Jenna Kaiser led the way with 13 kills on .407 hitting.
The Red Raiders will finish off their season Saturday when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the No. 2-ranked Cornhuskers. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT.
