CANYON, Texas - Texas Tech softball got its first taste of action for the 2007-08 season Saturday at West Texas A&M. The Red Raiders beat Lubbock Christian 8-0 and lost a close 4-3 battle to WTAMU in abbreviated contests.
All games Saturday at Lady Buffs Yard were abbreviated to just 90 minutes per contest. Because games played in the fall do not count on official season results, official stats were not kept. Jaimee Stinson enjoyed a successful day, however, with two homeruns and five runs batted in.
Coming off a second-place finish at the Big 12 tournament to conclude the season, the Red Raiders picked up where they left off early againt LCU. Tech put four runs on the board, highlighted by a two-run homer from junior Jaimee Stinson. The Red Raiders scored one run in each of the next four innings to finish with the 8-0 win.
Freshman Tye Coats turned in a strong showing from the mound against the Lady Chaps. Coats gave up just one hit in four innings of work while striking out three and not giving up a walk. Stinson led the way offensively by going 2 for 3, including a double and 2 RBI.
Game two with WTAMU saw the Lady Buffs gaining the advantage early by putting two runs on the board in the first two innings. A big three-run homerun from Stinson put Tech ahead 3-2 after three innings. Errors came back and bit the Red Raiders in the fourth inning as the Lady Buffs took advantage of the miscues with two unearned runs to go ahead 4-3. The Red Raiders mounted a late comeback effort, but a close play at first base that would have tied the game gave WTAMU the win.
Tech will have a rematch with both the Lady Buffs and Lady Chaps tomorrow at LCU fields. First pitches are set for 10 a.m. against WTAMU and 2:30 p.m. against the Lady Chaps.
