LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 43 Texas Tech men's golf team finished the first day of competition at the Lost Dunes Golf Course in Bridgman, Mich., in third with a score of 296. Three Red Raiders finished the day in the top ten, led by sophomore Oscar Floren in fourth.
Floren shot a first round 71, one-over to finish in the top five to lead all Red Raiders in the standings. Tied for eighth are Tech's Andrew Dresser, junior, and senior Shaun Melville with a first round 73, three-over-par. In the first tournament of their Tech career, freshman Santiago Rivas and junior Nicolas Allain shot a 79 and 80 first-round score, respectively. Rivas ended the day in a tie for 55th, while Allain turned in a tie for 61st-place.
Tech only trails Kent State (First-287) and Michigan State (Second-294) in the standings, while leading six teams that are currently ranked higher in the Golf Week/Sangarin Performance Index poll. Most notably Tech is in front of No. 26 Arkansas, No. 32 Tulsa, No.33 SMU and No.35 Toledo. Tech also leads the Big 12's No. 34 Colorado by two strokes and No. 37 Texas A&M by seven.
The tournament will continue with a 9 a.m. start at the Lost Dunes Golf Club in Bridgman, Mich., tomorrow. The 54-hole event will conclude on Sun., Sept. 19.
