Floren Paces Tech to Fourth Place First-Round Finish

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No.27 Texas Tech men's golf team opened up the Big 12 Championships in Trinity, Texas, with a stellar 299 first round. Sophomore Oscar Floren leads the Red Raider drive into its fourth-place finish with an individual finish of tied for 11th.
Floren, who shot an opening-round one-over 73, paces the Red and Black who finished the round with three golfers in the top 20. Rounding out Tech's competitors are junior Andrew Dresser (74), senior Shaun Melville (75), junior Tyler Symons (77) and junior Nicolas Allain (79).
Dresser finished the day in a tie for 16th, followed by teammate Melville who wrapped up the course in a tie for 18th. Dresser and Melville carded a two-over- and three-over-par performance to conclude the first round. Symons posted a four-over outing while Allain closed out the competing Red Raiders with a seven-over effort.
Leading the overall field is No. 2 Oklahoma State with a team score of 285. No. 34 Oklahoma stands in second place after the first with a score of 290 trailed by No. 67 Missouri (295), No.27 Tech (299) and Iowa State (302) in third through fifth. Rounding out the field are No. 42 Texas A&M (303), Nebraska (303), No. 49 Baylor (303), No. 35 Kansas (304), No. 66 Kansas State (308) and Texas (308) in sixth through 12th.
Leading the individual pack is Baylor's Jeremy Alcorn with a first round five-under 67. Overall ten individuals shot under-par for the round, while OSU was the only team to shoot under-par for the first round.
The Red Raiders are still looking to top their previous best of fifth at the Championships, which they set in 2003 and 2004.
The second round of the 2005 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday with the final round of 18 scheduled for Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
The Red Raiders will be the first out of the tees with an 8 a.m. tee time with Iowa State and Texas A&M.
