LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 15 Nebraska used a two-run sixth to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Huskers to a 3-1 win over Texas Tech softball on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Cornhuskers (34-12; 12-0 Big 12) drew first blood in the contest, plating a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Lead off batter Anne Steffan bunted for a single to start the inning. After stealing second, Steffan scored two batters later on and RBI groundout by Nicole Trimboli.
Tech starter Julie Hauck was replaced after only one inning of work by Erin Crawford, who came on to keep Nebraska off the scoreboard for the next four innings. Crawford (9-13) limited the Huskers to only three hits and no earned runs, while striking out five and walking four in six innings of relief.
Tech (19-34; 1-15 Big 12) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 1-1. Junior catcher Lisa Lawler lead the inning off with a sharp double to left center fielder and was lifted for pinch runner Amanda Oakes. The next batter, Ashleigh Renfro, struck out swinging but the ball was mishandled by the catcher, who then threw wildly to first base allowing Oakes to score and Renfro to advance all the way to third. Renfro attempted to score on a bunt single by Ashley Parker, but was gunned down at the plate.
Nebraska retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning, plating a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Huskers were able to take advantage of three walks, one of which was intentional, a wild pitch and a passed ball in the inning.
The Lady Raiders attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting singles by Andrea Joachims and Ashley Parker in the inning, but the team was unable to continue the inning and stranded both runners
Texas Tech softball will be back in action on Thursday when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State in a doubleheader. During the series the team will honor its three senior for Senior Day.
