NORMAN, Oklahoma - Freshman third basemen Natalie Kula had a two-run double in the top of the first inning, but could not lead Texas Tech softball to a win, as it fell to Oklahoma 7-3 in at OU Softball Complex in Norman, Okla., in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday night.
After the start of the game was delayed an hour by rain and lightning, the Lady Raiders (19-31; 1-12 Big 12) came to the plate and got off to a hot start in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Ashley Parker singled to the right side of the infield to open the inning. After a Natalie Enderlin fielder choice forced Parker out at second, the next two batters, Elyssa Sigala and Kelly Rhyne, drew walks to load the bases. With two outs in the inning, Kula delivered by doubling to left field to drive in two runs and put Tech up 2-0.
Oklahoma responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning against Tech starter Kassy Planck (2-3). After allowing a lead off single, Planck got the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. The next five batters reached base either by base hit or walk to plate four runs for the Sooners and send the game to the top of the second with a 4-2 OU lead.
Planck lasted only two innings, allowing five hits and walking three, while yeilding four earned runs. She was replaced by Erin Crawford at the beginning of the third inning.
The Sooners (32-16-1; 6-6 Big 12) added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. A one-out single and shortstop error paved the way for catcher Heather Scaglione to single up the middle and drive in both runners for a 6-2 Oklahoma advantage.
Britney Stolle hit her sixth double of the season to drive in a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull Tech within three runs, but Oklahoma plated a run in the bottom of the inning to the final score of 7-3
Texas Tech softball will be back in action at Rocky Johnson Field this weekend as they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a two game series. Game one will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening and the series finale is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
