NORMAN, Okla. - The Texas Tech volleyball team won back-to-back Big 12 matches for just the first time this season as it swept the Oklahoma Sooners, 30-21, 30-26, 30-17, Saturday night at the OU Field House in Norman, Okla.
Tech (10-13, 5-9) was led by Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) who continued to blister Big 12 opponents racking up a school record for kills in a three game match with 26 on her way to a .610 night hitting. The record broke the previous high of 22 which she set on Wednesday. Johnson completed her sixth double-double of the season adding 10 digs to go with two aces.
"Johnson had an unbelievable week," commented Tech Head Coach Jeff Nelson. "Breaking the school record for kills in a three-game match once is incredible, and she did it twice this week. She was also firing from the service line and contributed a lot points for the week. Johnson is really establishing herself as one of the better players in the conference."
The Red Raiders hit .364 in the first game en route to the 30-21 win and extended its consecutive games-won streak to 28 dating back to the 1999 season.
Oklahoma (5-18, 3-12) could not keep up with the fast pace set forth by the Red Raiders as no player recorded more than seven digs and just Megan O'Connell tallied more than 10 kills, 12.
Tech dominated the stat sheet hitting .350 for the match, a high for a Big 12 match this season, tallied 58 kills, recorded five aces and dug 44 balls.
Game two saw Tech struggle with its focus as the Sooners led early, 10-6. OU would extend its lead to 18-12 before the Red Raiders got a spark from Ann Romjue's (Papillion, Neb.) kill. After a 7-1 run the Red Raiders had knotted up the score at 19-all. Tied at 21, Tech put together a 5-0 run taking a 26-21 lead before winning the game, 30-26.
In completing the sweep, 30-18, Tech held Oklahoma to just .049 hitting. The game was not even as close as the score reflects as the Red Raiders played with a large lead the entire match.
The Red Raiders will return to the United Spirit Arena on Wednesday as they look to even the season series with the Baylor Bears. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
