LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team equaled its longest win streak of the season Wednesday night as it ousted the Baylor Bears 30-32, 30-21, 30-20, 30-19 at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas.
Tech (11-13, 6-9) rattled off its third straight Big 12 Conference match behind the arm of Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) who racked up 16 kills on 30 attempts as she hit .433 for the match.
Baylor (9-17, 2-13) took its fourth consecutive game from Tech by winning the first game of the night, 32-30. The Red Raiders fell behind early, 2-0, and never held a lead in the game. The Bears lead by as many as four late, 24-20. That is when Tech made its move and tied the game up at 29-29 on a McGehee kill. After a pair of service errors the game was tied again at 30. A double-touch call against Baylor was made but changed and a replay was called. The Bears took full advantage of the replay and won the next two points.
The Red Raiders came out hot in game two and jumped out to a 3-0 to start aided by two of Kelly Johnson's (Fort Worth, Texas) team-high 21 kills. The Bears answered with a 4-0 run before the two schools started to trade points. With the score knotted at 15-all, Tech took control of the game at that point and took game two, 30-21, to even the match, 1-1, at intermission.
Setter Laura Grote (Austin, Texas) led Tech as she hit .571 for the game and was just one of four Red Raiders to hit over .300 for the match. Stacey Poole (Las Cruces, N.M.) pounded out 10 kills to hit .333 while Johnson hit .327. Grote completed her fourth double-double of the season by adding 10 digs. Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb.) had 12 digs while Jessy Herrera (New Braunfels, Texas) also had 10.
Game three saw Baylor win the first point but not lead again. Tech lead, 4-2, and built its lead to six 16-10. Leading by eight, 20-12, the two teams traded points before the scarlet and black took a 2-1 lead with the 30-20 win.
Texas Tech completed its third straight conference win by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth game. Baylor would hang tough and cut the Red Raider lead down to three, 14-11. But Tech would score the next three points en route to the 30-19 win in the game and the 3-1 victory in the match.
Tech will now head down to Austin, Texas, for a 7 p.m. first serve with the Texas Longhorns. Texas has dropped four of its last six and three straight at home.
