LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team hosts Iowa State in a pair of games at Rocky Johnson Field this weekend, with Saturday's game beginning at 1 p.m. and Sunday's contest starting at noon.
On Sunday three Red Raider seniors, Shauna Briggs, Sandy Butler and Amanda Renfro, will be honored during Senior Day activities.
The Cyclones hold a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series, though four of those victories came during Tech's first season after revitalizing the program in 1996.
Last season the teams split a pair of contests in Ames, with Tech taking the opener, 3-2, before dropping a 6-1 decision in the second contest. In Tech's victory, Paula Workman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, including a home run and a double. Kristi Tunnell also drove in a pair of runs with one hit. In the loss the Red Raiders managed just three hits and made two errors.
In 1999, the teams also split two games in Ames, with ISU taking a 4-0 victory in the opener before the Red Raiders came back for a 1-0 win in the second contest.
The only games played in Lubbock came in 1998 when Tech swept a doubleheader from the Cyclones, 2-1 and 1-0. The Red Raiders also won the meeting in the Big 12 Tournament that season, taking a 3-1 decision in Oklahoma City.
The two schools did not meet in 1997, but the Cyclones won all four games in 1996, three in Ames and one in the conference tourney.
Butler has already set the career hits mark at Texas Tech earlier this season, and is steadily climbing up the ladder in the Big 12 all-time rankings, currently standing fourth with four regular season games remaining plus the conference tournament.
Jamie Foutch (Oklahoma State, 1996-99) holds the Big 12 record for hits in a career with 278, with Oklahoma's Lisa Carey looking to break that record, as the OU senior currently stands at 272 for the Sooners.
Jennifer Lizama (Nebraska, 1997-2000) is third on the list with 254 hits, and Butler stands fourth with 240 after last weekend's sweep at Missouri. Oklahoma's Ashli Barrett is fifth on the list with 229 hits.
Tech travels to Austin, Texas, Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Texas Longhorns that will conclude Big 12 action and regular season play for the Red Raiders. The twinbill at Red and Charline McCombs Field on the UT campus begins at 5 p.m. with the second contest to follow.
