Women's Tennis Splits Weekend

El Paso, Texas - In the final weekend of the 2001 regular season the Texas Tech women's tennis team split against 60th-ranked New Mexico State and the University of Texas-El Paso. The Red Raiders dropped to the Aggies on Saturday, 6-1, but rebounded against the Miners, 4-3 on Sunday.
Tech closes out the regular season 9-10 overall and 3-8 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are 3-2 in the month of April after going winless in March.
56th-ranked Irina Tereschenko won both matches this weekend in the No. 1 position. She defeated Elke Blodau of NMSU in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Against the Miners she dropped Jana Perkova in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Tereschenko has been ranked five weeks in a row and closes out the regular season 12-5 overall and 4-5 in league play.
In the upset over the Miners, Tereschenko had help from Beverly Dawson and Sonnia Orellana. Dawson won in the No. 3 position and Orellana won in straight sets in the No. 4 position. Tereschenko teamed-up with Dawson in the No. 1 doubles position to defeat Ana Bmas and Jana Perkova, 9-8. To clinch the doubles point Barbara Schraml and Kendall Brooks won in the No. 2 position, 8-5.
Following this weekend's matches the Red Raiders swing back into action in Waco, Texas, at the Big 12 Tourney on the Baylor campus, April 26-28.
