LUBBOCK, Texas - It was Senior Day at the Texas Tech Recreational Intramural Fields this afternoon as Baylor and Texas Tech met in a softball doubleheader. Baylor, which came into the twin-bill as the Big 12's last place team, ruined the moment and put a shock into the Red Raiders who were playing to move into sole possession of fourth place in the conference.
Baylor took both games from the Red Raiders, winning by scores of 3-1 in the first game and 7-6 in the second game. Amanda Renfro took one loss for Tech falling to 12-18 on the season, and Dana Yocum took the loss in the second game and now has a record of 4-10 on the season.
In the first game, Sandy Butler led the Red Raiders with a 4-for-4 hitting performance. All told, the Red Raiders combined for nine hits. However, they left eight runners stranded on the base paths and the only scoring they could muster was a solo homerun off the bat of Paula Workman, her fourth dinger of the season.
Game two was a festival of hitting as both teams combined for 24 hits. Again the difference was that Tech left nine runners stranded on base, including five stranded in scoring position. A rally in the seventh inning came up short for the Raiders as the tying run was left at first base. Lynsey Haij collected three hits for the Raiders and senior catcher Kristi Tunnell went out in style in her last home game, collecting a pair of RBI. The 12 hits for Texas Tech tied a season high.
Texas Tech returns to action this weekend when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to take on the Iowa State Cyclones.
