Red Raiders Take First Game Against Kansas State

After two time changes, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Kansas State Wildcats opened the three-game weekend series Saturday afternoon with the Red Raiders winning 19-7 in seven innings. The game ended in the bottom of the seventh under the Big 12 12-run lead after seven innings rule. The Red Raiders pounded out 16 hits and scored in six of the seven innings to improve their conference mark to 7-6.
Tech jumped out to an early 13-0 lead after three innings. In the first, the Red Raiders scored six runs on five hits as they sent 10 batters to plate. Cory Sellars provided the offense with his first grand slam of the season. It was his third home run of the year and Tech's fourth grand slam of the season.
The Red Raiders added a pair of runs in the second inning on a solo home run by Shaun Larkin and a bases loaded walk by David O'Keeffe. In the third, Texas Tech added four more runs on just two hits. Jason Rainey's double scored Scott Holzhauer and Sellars' bases loaded double cleared the bases.
Texas Tech scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to extend their lead to 15-1. Chaz Eiguren talled his 50th RBI of the season in the fifth with a sacrifice fly that scored Holzhauer. In the sixth inning, Marco Cunningham blasted a two-run homer to centerfield that scored Rainey. It was Cunningham's second home run of the season.
Heading into the top of the seventh, the Red Raiders held a 15-3 lead, but Kansas State scored four runs to extend the game into the bottom of the seventh. However, Texas Tech scored four runs of their own in the bottom half of the seventh to put the game away. The seventh inning opened with back-to-back-to-back walks by Cunningham, Sellars and Eric McLamore. Daron Bertillion made the score 17-7 with a single to left that scored Cunningham and Sellars. Holzhauer finished the game with a two-run double to right center that scored McLamore and Bertillion.
J.J. Newman earned his third win of the season with 6.1 innings of work. He allowed six runs on five hits, four walks and seven strikeouts. Clancy Fossum finished the game by facing four batters in 0.2 innings. He allowed one run on one hit.
At the plate, Sellars finished the day with seven runs batted in while going 2-3 with a grand slam, double, two runs and two walks. Holzhauer went 3-5 with two runs and two RBI while four other Red Raiders tallied two hits apiece. Cunningham scored four times and finished the day 2-2 with three RBI and two walks.
The two teams will finish the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. Texas Tech is now 18-16 overall and 7-6 in the Big 12 while Kansas State falls to 9-17 and 1-11 in conference play.
