With identical 9-2 scores, the Texas Tech Red Raiders swept a doubleheader and the three-game series with Kansas State on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The Red Raiders won the series opener on Saturday, 19-7. Tech improved to 9-6 in the Big 12 and 20-16 on the season.
The first game, which started at 9:58 a.m., saw the Red Raiders erupt for seven runs in the seventh inning to open up a 9-1 lead. In the seventh, Texas Tech sent 11 batters to plate and scored the seven runs on seven straight hits. Of those seven hits, Chad Landry's double to left center was the only extra-base hit, but it did not score any runs. All seven runs were driven in on singles.
Starting pitcher Cory Metzler earned his second win of the season with his first complete game. He allowed just two runs on seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, Marco Cunningham went 2-5 with a run, two RBI and a stolen base while Jason Rainey finished the game 2-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. Chaz Eiguren tallied a pair of RBI's with a single in the seventh inning.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Red Raiders take a 4-1 lead after three innings. Tech scored two runs in the first inning without getting a hit on three walks and one error. Scott Holzhauer scored the game's first run when Rainey forced him home on a bases loaded walk. With Miles Durham at the plate, Landry scored the second run on a pass ball.
After allowing a Kansas State run in the top half of the fourth, Texas Tech answered with two in the bottom half. Rainey singled, stole second and scored on a Cunningham single to left. Then Cunningham stole second and scored on a Trey Lunsford double to right center.
The Red Raiders added one run in the fifth and four in the seventh to give starter Kevin Tracey his third win of the season. In the seventh, Rainey started the inning with his seventh triple of the season off the rightfield wall. Rainey needs just one triple to tie the single-season school record of eight.
Tracey went five innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits and three strikeouts. Blake McGinley came out of the bullpen for the last four innings and held Kansas State scoreless on just two hits. In the process, McGinley lowered his Big 12 ERA to 1.86.
Texas Tech will be off this week before playing a three-game series at Iowa State next weekend. The Red Raiders and Cyclones will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
