After clearing three inches of snow from Cap Timm Field in Ames, Iowa, the Red Raiders and Cyclones opened their three-game series with Texas Tech holding off Iowa State 6-5. With the win and a loss by Texas A&M, the Red Raiders took sole possession of third place in the Big 12 standings. Tech is now 21-16 and 10-6 in conference play and have won eight of their last 10 league games.
In the second inning, Texas Tech sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter. Eric McLamore started the scoring with a bases loaded single that scored Jason Rainey. Rainey and Marco Cunningham started the inning with back-to-back walks and Trey Lunsford loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch.
Scott Holzhauer's double down the rightfield scored Cunningham, Lunsford and McLamore to give Tech a 4-0 lead. Holzhauer scored the fifth Texas Tech run on a single by Shaun Larkin.
The Red Raiders added a single run in the top of seventh after Mark Austry lead off the inning with a double and scored two batters later with a sacrifice fly by Cunningham.
Tech starter J.J. Newman won his fourth game of the season after allowing three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings. After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the first, Newman retired 15 of 17 batters until the Cyclones scored three in the bottom of seventh to close the score to 6-3.
In the eighth inning, Iowa State added two runs off reliever Blake McGinley to make the score 6-5. Kevin Tracey entered the game with one out in the ninth and a runner at first and needed just two pitches to finish the game and earn his fourth save of the year. Tracey induced a pop out from Jade O'Brien and a fly out to left by Aaron Runk to seal the win for the Red Raiders.
The final two games of the series will be tommorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon. The Red Raiders will return to Dan Law Field for a five-game homestand beginning on Wednesday against West Texas A&M. Tech will host Texas next weekend in Lubbock and Southwest Texas State on April 18.
