LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's softball team battled down to the wire for a pair of victories on day one of the Red Raider Invitational at the Texas Tech Recreation Intramural Fields. The Red Raiders rallied from behind to defeat the New Mexico State Roadrunners 5-4 in 10 innings in their first game then held on for a 6-4 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs in the second game.
In game one, New Mexico State held a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Tech first baseman Tamara Harrington was hit by a pitch then freshman right fielder Amanda Douglas stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the score and send the game to extra innings. Both teams struggled to score until the bottom of the tenth inning when Paula Workman hit a fly ball that blew over the head of NMSU right fielder LeAnne Gomez and scored Tiffany Harrington from third base to secure the win.
In the second game Texas Tech seemed to be in complete control until the top of the seventh inning. Amanda Douglas had hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Shauna Briggs had added a solo shot in the sixth to give the Red Raiders a 6-0 lead. However, the Aztecs rallied in the seventh and capitalized off a pair of Red Raider errors to cut the lead to 6-4. With the bases loaded and two out, Amanda Renfro came on in relief of Dana Yocum and struck out the last batter to earn the save. Yocum who pitched 6.2 innings while allowing three earned runs, recorded her third win of the season.
The Red Raiders are back in action tomorrow when they face SDSU and NMSU in the final day of the tournament.
