LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team lost two games on day two of the Red Raider Invitational, falling to New Mexico State 5-2 and dropping another contest to San Diego State 2-1 in 10 innings of play at the Recreational Intramural Fields on the Texas Tech campus. Sunday's losses drop Tech to an overall record of 11-24 on the season. By virtue of a tie-breaker formula New Mexico State won the tournament championship.
Texas Tech fell behind early in game 1 when the Roadrunners scored three runs in the top of the second. The Red Raiders scored two runs in the third inning with a RBI single from Eva Harshman and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Amanda Douglas. However, the Roadrunner's bats were too much for Tech's pitchers as NMSU added another run in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth to pull away for the 5-2 victory.
Game was a pitchers dual between San Diego State's Sandra Durazo and Tech's Amanda Renfro. Both pitchers held their opponents scoreless through eight innings. In the eighth, The Aztecs broke free for a run but the Raiders came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score when Brianna Nietert knocked a double to centerfield to score Amanda Douglas from third base. The Aztecs came back in the tenth and scored a run. The Raiders were unable to answer and the game ended in a 2-1 Aztec victory.
The Raiders will be back in action next Saturday when they host Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener.
