The Texas Tech baseball team continued its offensive surge as they posted season-highs of runs and hits in Tuesday's 20-5 win over West Texas A&M. The Red Raiders pounded six West Texas A&M pitchers for 22 hits, including back-to-back home runs by seniors Chaz Eiguren and Scott Holzhauer in the nine-run second inning. Six players recorded multihit games.
Once again, Texas Tech started out quickly with two runs in the first, nine in the second and six in the third. Tech sent 15 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored all nine runs with two outs. After Eric McLamore's fly out to center field, 10 consecutive batters reached base. After a Marco Cunningham single, Miles Durham homered to score Jason Rainey and Cunningham. Shaun Larkin then walked and Eiguren and Holzhauer hit their back-to-back home runs. Eiguren's was a two-run towering home run over the left field wall. The Red Raiders weren't finished as David O'Keeffe doubled down the right field line and Rainey tripled to left center. The inning finally ended when Durham grounded out four batter later.
Chaz Ackerman won his first game of the year with five scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out four and allowed eight hits. Five Tech relievers went four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and four strikeouts.
Texas Tech will be action again when the host Southern California this weekend at Dan Law Field. The two teams will tangle on Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Trojans come into the series as the sixth-ranked team in the country by Baseball America.
