LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech womens tennis team opened the season with a 7-2 victory over Abilene Christian University at the Athletic Training Center on Thursday. Abilene Christian is the pre-season #11 pick for Division II.
Coach Tim Siegel was pleased with victory but still felt some kinks needed be worked out before the Big 12 opener with Texas on Saturday. "It was good to get the win," Siegel said "but I was a little disappointed in our concentration."
Despite the lapses in concentration, the effort was definitely there for the Red Raiders. Tech won five three set matches in singles competition. "I was pleased with our effort," Siegel said "especially with Misty (Meyer) and Noel (Ruiz) each battling from a set down to get a win." Also victorious for Tech besides Ruiz in #5 singles and Meyer in #6 singles were Zana Zlebnik, Amanda Earhart, Alenka Ovin and Ana Serrot. The doubles team of Earhart and Serrot earned Techs seventh win of the match.
The Red Raiders will be in action again on Saturday, January 30, 1999 against the sixth-ranked nationally University of Texas. The match will be indoors at the Lubbock Country Club. Admission is free.
