LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team will close out their regular season with a home match against Tyler Junior College on Friday. This will be Techs first home action since March 7. The match is slated to start at 1:30 pm and will be held at the Municipal Courts which are located near 66th St. and Indiana Avenue.
Tech is coming off a pair of 7-2 defeats last weekend to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Currently the Red Raiders are 4-16 overall (2-9 in Big 12) and in the midst of a 10-match losing streak. Tech's last win was a 6-3 decision over Missouri on February 28.
Despite the lack of recent team success, sophomore Alenka Ovin is putting together a stellar individual season. Playing all but three matches at No. 2 singles, Ovin has put together a 13-7 overall mark (6-5 in Big 12). She was the only member of the squad to win both of her singles matches last weekend and one of only two Red Raiders singles player's to record a win (Noel Ruiz was the other). Ovins 13 victories lead Texas Tech.
Zana Zlebnik and Ruiz are tied for second on the team with seven wins apiece. Amanda Earhart is third with six wins despite missing five matches with injuries. Ovin also teams with Zlebnik to form Tech's top doubles tandem. They lead the current squad with four wins. Ruiz and senior Misty Meyer are second in doubles wins with three.
Meyer will be competing in the final home match of career. She enters her final regular season match with 30 combined singles and doubles career wins.
Tyler JC comes into the match as one of the top-ranked JC programs in the nation. The Apaches are coached by John E. Peterson. He has been the head men's and women's tennis coach at Tyler JC since the 1987-88 school year. Peterson has won five NJCAA women's national championships and seven men's titles. The Apaches top player is sophomore Brenda Vlasak. She finished last season the No. 2 ranked junior college player in the country.
After playing Tyler JC, Texas Tech's next action will be on April 29-May 2 at the Big 12 Conference Tennis Championship being held in College Station, Texas.
