Arsic and Guglieri highlight weekend with Top-40 doubles upset
TULSA, Okla. — Texas Tech men's tennis wrapped up a successful weekend at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday afternoon, highlighted by a strong doubles run from Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri that included an upset victory over the nation's No. 40-ranked doubles pair.
Seven Red Raiders opened competition on Saturday in the pre-qualifying singles draw. Arsic, Max Pade and Imran Daniel Hazli each earned opening-round victories to advance to the Round of 128. Hazli put together the deepest singles run for Tech, defeating Andreas Timini and David Schwarc to reach the final round of pre-qualifying before falling to Jeremy Zhang, 6-4, 6-3.
Following their exits from the main draw, several Red Raiders found success in the pre-qualifying consolation bracket, posting a perfect 4-0 record all together. Miguel Angel Machado defeated Carson Baker by retirement, while Ludovico Vaccari topped Adam Farag-Cao, 6-2, 6-4. Felipe Pagnacco added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Oliver Sanders, and Guglieri closed out the sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Luis Llorens Saracho.
Texas Tech's biggest success came in doubles play. The pairs of Vaccari/Hazli and Arsic/Guglieri both earned opening-round victories in pre-qualifying action. Arsic and Guglieri continued their momentum, winning a pair of matches to advance through pre-qualifying and secure a spot in the qualifying draw.
The duo then delivered one of the tournament's top results, upsetting No. 40-ranked Alejandro Melero and Asahi Harazaki, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, in the opening round of qualifying. After edging out the first-set tiebreak, Arsic and Guglieri broke serve twice in the second set to seal the straight-set victory and advance to the Round of 16.
Their run came to an end in the next round, where they fell to Vojtech Vales and Shaurya Bharadwaj, 6-2, 6-4.
