OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – Texas Tech senior Ben Gregg owns the lead at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational and the Red Raiders are just one stroke back on the team leaderboard with play suspended until Saturday due to darkness at the Olympia Fields Country Club. Previously scheduled as a three-day tournament, play was adjusted due to rain in the forecast with 36 continuous holes on Friday and the third and final round set for Saturday morning.
Texas Tech completed its two rounds on Friday, finishing at 25-under-under while Illinois leads its home tournament after posting 26-under. Arizona State was unable to finish its second round and is currently third at 24-under followed by Oklahoma State (-20) and Georgia Tech (-19) at the tournament. Teams that were unable to complete their second round on Friday night are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday – followed by the final round.
Gregg leads the tournament at 11-under-par after shooting 6-under in his second round. His 64 came with eight birdies, nine pars and a double bogey being his only blemish in the round. Gregg, who finished as the runner-up earlier this week at the Iverness Intercollegiate for the best individual finish of his career, opened his day by shooting a 5-under 65, highlighted by making an eagle on the Par 5, 571-yard ninth hole. He added four birdies in a round that saw only one bogey on his scorecard through 18 holes at the tournament.
Gregg currently holds a one-stroke lead over Max Herendeen (Illinois) who is at 10-under while Oscar Couilleau (Arizona State) is at 9-under with three holes remaining in his second round.
Tech's Connor Graham is four strokes back of Gregg after shooting 7-under during his two rounds on Friday and is currently in seventh place. Graham started the day with a round of 1-under before catching fire and carding a 6-under, 64 in his second round.
