Gregg earns best career finish as Inverness runner-up

TOLEDO, Ohio — No. 5 Texas Tech finished the Inverness Intercollegiate in fourth place on Tuesday, led by a career performance from senior Ben Gregg, who earned the best individual finish of his career by tying for second at Inverness Club.
Gregg was one of just three players in the 90-player field to finish under par, carding a 2-under 211 across 54 holes to tie Clemson's Oscar Holm-Bredkjaer for second. Host Toledo's Bence Bertenyi claimed medalist honors at 3-under 210.
Gregg carded a 1-over 72 in Tuesday's final round while playing in the final group. He walked to the 18th hole with a chance to force a tie for the individual lead, but his birdie attempt missed by a foot before he tapped in for par to finish at 2-under for the tournament.
Gregg was even par through 11 holes on Tuesday after recording two birdies and two bogeys. A double bogey on the par-3 12th dropped him off the leading pace, but he responded with a birdie on No. 14 before closing with four consecutive pars.
The runner-up finish marks Gregg's best career individual finish and his second career top-five finish. His previous best finish at a team event was third place at last season's Valspar Collegiate Invitational.
As a team, Texas Tech shot an 8-over 292 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 14-over 866. No. 2 Auburn captured the team title at 11-over 863, while Toledo and East Tennessee State tied for second at 12-over 864. Toledo shot a field-best 7-under 277 in the final round, seven shots better than any other team Tuesday.
Simon Hovdal led the remaining Red Raiders with a tie for 19th at 6-over 219 after shooting a 2-over 73 in the final round. Adam Bresnu, Connor Graham and Tim Wiedemeyer all tied for 36th at 8-over 221. Bresnu carded a 2-over 73, Graham shot a 3-over 74, while Wiedemeyer shot a 6-over 77 in the final round.
The Red Raiders will continue their fall schedule Friday at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Illinois. The three-day event runs through Sunday, with one round scheduled each day. Texas Tech will have Wednesday off for travel before a practice round Thursday.
