Gregg's 66 propels Red Raiders up leaderboard

TOLEDO, Ohio — Headlined by Ben Gregg's second-round tournament-best 5-under 66 on Monday, No. 5 Texas Tech moved into third place at the Inverness Intercollegiate. Gregg's round, which matched a career low, pushed him into first place at 3-under after 36 holes, one shot ahead of Oklahoma's Ryder Cowan. The pair are the only two players in the 90-player field under par through two rounds.
Gregg posted a blistering 6-under 30 on the back nine Monday, highlighted by a stretch from Nos. 10-15 that included birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 14 and 15 and an eagle on No. 13. He had one blemish on his card on the front nine, a bogey on No. 4, while recording eight pars to make the turn at 1-over.
His 5-under 66 matched a career-low mark that he has now carded four times. Gregg previously shot a 5-under 66 twice at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational last season during his junior year, while his first came at the same Inverness Intercollegiate in the third round of his sophomore season. Gregg heads into Tuesday seeking his fourth career top-10 finish and first career victory.
The Red Raiders shot 5-under 279 as a team on Monday, matching No. 2 Auburn and No. 17 Oklahoma for the lowest team score of the second round.
In addition to Gregg's round, Simon Hovdal posted a 1-under 70 to move into a tie for 25th at 4-over 146. Tim Wiedemeyer carded an even-par 71 and is tied for 12th at 2-over 144, giving Texas Tech three players inside the top 25. Adam Bresnu shot a 1-over 72 as the Red Raiders' fourth counting score and is tied for 39th at 6-over 148, while Connor Graham carded a 3-over 74 and is tied for 32nd at 5-over 147.
Texas Tech, which won the 2019 and 2022 editions of the Inverness Intercollegiate, heads into Tuesday's final round trailing first-place Iowa by two shots and second-place Auburn by one.
