Red Raiders open Inverness Intercollegiate in seventh

TOLEDO, Ohio — No. 5 Texas Tech opened its 2026-27 season Sunday with the first round of the Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness Club, finishing the opening round tied for seventh at 11-over 295 in a loaded field of 18 teams.
The Red Raiders were led by a trio of players who each carded a 2-over 73, as Ben Gregg, Tim Wiedemeyer and Connor Graham are all tied for 18th individually after the opening 18 holes. The field features 90 players.
Gregg got off to a hot start, carding a birdie on the first hole, and finished the front nine 1-under after a bogey on No. 7 followed by a birdie on the 593-yard, par-5 eighth hole. He closed Sunday with three bogeys and six pars on his card, including a stretch of five straight pars on Nos. 11-15, eventually finishing 2-over.
Conversely, Wiedemeyer had a slow start to his day, which included bogeys on two of his first three holes. He was 2-over par at the turn and dropped to 4-over par on the day after the 14th hole, but answered with pars on Nos. 15 and 16 before closing his opening 18 holes with back-to-back birdies to finish 2-over.
Meanwhile, Graham, fresh off his third Walker Cup appearance, shot even-par over his first nine holes before dropping two shots on the back nine. His round was highlighted by a spectacular hole-out on the eighth hole, where he carded a 2 on the 481-yard, par-4 eighth.
Simon Hovdal and Adam Bresnu each opened the season with a 5-over 76 and are tied for 51st.
Iowa leads the 18-team field after shooting a 1-under 283, while Tennessee, host Toledo and Ohio State are tied for second at 7-over 291. Purdue is fifth at 9-over, followed by Auburn at 10-over and the Red Raiders at 11-over.
Texas Tech will continue play Monday with the second round of the 54-hole event. Play begins at 8 a.m. EDT, with coverage of Monday's round available on ESPN+ beginning at approximately 1 p.m. ET. The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes, also beginning at 8 a.m. EDT.
