Tech slugs to 15-11 series win over BYU
May 09, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders offense exploded for 15 runs and 17 hits to clinch a Senior Day Win
LUBBOCK, Texas – Connor Shouse went 5-for-5 and threw two shutout innings to earn the save while junior Logan Hughes went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and two free passes to power Texas Tech to a key 15-11 win over BYU Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
With the series on the line and on Senior Day, Texas Tech (26-25, 9-18 Big 12) earned its first series win Saturday afternoon since Mar. 20-22 at Arizona.
In the victory, the Red Raiders got 14 combined RBIs from Shouse (two), Hughes (five), Linkin Garcia (four) and catcher Matt Quintanar (three).
Garcia, who went 2-for-5 with a key two-run single in the first and tripled home two insurance runs in the eighth, recorded his 74th and 75th hits of the season. With the four RBIs, Garcia also cleared 55 runs driven in and now has 75 hits, 50 runs scored and 55 RBIs during his freshman season.
Starting for the four-straight game behind the dish, the Red Raiders also got a strong afternoon from Quintanar, who went 3-for-5 with a two-run single and a solo home run. Quintanar, who caught all 36 innings this week recorded his sixth home run of the season and third in the last five games.
The homer for Quintanar was one of three longballs the Red Raiders hit, as Hughes delivered his 16th home run of the season in the third and centerfield Kyeler Thompson also homered in the seventh. Hughes' homer was his 19th-career Big 12 home run bringing him into a tie with Keith Ginter and Jace Jung for second all-time in Big 12 Only home runs.
If Hughes is able to homer at least once next weekend in Cincinnati, the lefty slugger will become just the second Red Raider ever to reach 20 career Big 12 home runs. Former MLB veteran Josh Bard holds the all-time Texas Tech Big 12 Only homer mark, as the catcher launched 31 career conference homers.
After a scoreless first inning from sophomore Donovan Becerra, the Red Raiders used a one-out walk and a single to put runners on the corners with one out for Hughes.
Ahead in the count 2-0, Hughes ripped a ball to second base that instead of going for an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, was thrown away, allowing Tracer Lopez to come around to score and Shouse to scamper to third.
With Shouse at third and Hughes at second, the Red Raiders got the two-run single from Garcia to take a 3-0 lead into the second.
Down multiple runs for the first time all weekend, BYU (25-25, 13-14 Big 12) responded using a two-out throwing error in the second and a three-run home run from shortstop Ryder Robinson to take a 4-3 lead.
After a walk placed another runner on base, Becera used a foul out to Quintanar and an interference-aided double play to escape further damage.
With Shouse on first after a lead-off single, Hughes turned on an offspeed pitch from BYUs Nate Gray and hit a two-run, 418-foot blast over the wall in right center.
The blast gave Tech a 5-4 lead.
In the fourth, BYU put the lead-off man on against Becera, when designated hitter Matt Hansen was hit by a pitch.
With the tying run on, Tech turned to reliever Bryce Suiter who retired the next two batters on a fielders choice and a liner to center.
Just one out from hanging a shutdown inning, Suiter walked Robinson on four pitches and allowed a 369-foot wind-aided home run to Cougar first baseman Ezra McNaughton that gave BYU the lead once again, this time at 7-5.
As they did all day long, the Red Raiders responded in the fourth, using a one-out hustle double from Coleman Ryan and back-to-back walks to load the bases for Shouse, who ripped the third offering he saw from BYU reliever Caysen Bell to tie the game at seven-all.
Just one batter later, the Red Raiders took the lead for good on a two-run RBI single from  Hughes and ultimately went ahead 11-7 on the two-run single from Quintanar.
In the fifth, Tech turned to senior Jacob Rogers who stranded two on and no out and the bases loaded with two out to hang a much-needed shutdown inning zero.
After the solo home run from Thompson put Tech on top, 12-7, the Red Raiders loaded the bases with one out, before BYU used a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to send the game to the sixth.
BYU used a three-run Crew McChesney three-run home run in the sixth to pull to within 12-10, and got a lead-off home run from catcher Parker Goff in the seventh to get to 12-11, but Lowe used a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to keep Tech on top 12-11.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Raiders used a two-out double from Shouse and a walk to Hughes to plate two key insurance runs on the triple from Garcia.
Up 14-11, Tech turned to Shouse in the eighth, as the righty retired the first two batters before allowing a two-out double to McHensey. Shouse ultimately stranded McChesney on a flyout to center.
The Quintanar home run in the eighth gave Shouse and the Red Raiders a 15-11 lead giving the righty a bit more breathing room in the ninth, where he worked around a one-out broken bat double from Goff to close out his second save of the season and the week.
On the week, Shouse went 7-for-17 with four RBIs at the plate and tossed four innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out three and walked just one.
In addition to Shouse, the Red Raiders got a 5-for-12 (.417) week from Hughes who homered three times and drove in two runs. He also scored seven times.
With the win, the Red Raiders have now won four of their last five and have moved to within one-half game of tying Kansas State for 11th place in the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats have lost nine-straight Big 12 games and play host to Cincinnati tomorrow. With a loss tomorrow, Kansas State would fall to 9-18 and into a tie with the Red Raiders.
