The Red Raiders fell for just the second time in the last six games
CINCINNATI – Texas Tech Baseball dropped its series opener to No. 25 Cincinnati Friday night, falling 13-1 in seven innings at UC Baseball Stadium.
In the setback, Texas Tech (26-26, 9-19) placed two on with two outs in the first on a one-out single from Tracer Lopez and a two-out walk from Logan Hughes. Lopez extended his team-leading on-base streak to 30-straight games and played in his 215th career game.
With the two runners on, Cincinnati's (36-18, 16-12 Big 12) Nathan Taylor struck out Linkin Garcia to end the threat.
Taylor went 5.1 innings on Friday night and allowed four hits and just one run. He struck out seven and walked just one.
Fresh off the strongest start of his Texas Tech career, Sophomore Kaysen Raineri went just 3.1 innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits as Cincy launched five home runs. Â
The first bomb, a three-run shot from first baseman Quinton Coats gave UC a 3-0 lead. Coats went 4-for-4 on Friday night and drove in six runs and scored three times. Five of his six RBIs came on the long ball, as the first baseman hit the three-run shot in the first and a two-run shot in the fourth. He also doubled twice in his four trips to the dish.
Coats was one of two Bearcats on the night to have multiple home runs as catcher Jack Natili also launched a pair of bombs homering in the third and the fourth.
Texas Tech scored its lone run of the night on an RBI single from Connor Shouse. Shouse's single scored Kyeler Thompson who hit a hustle double over the third base bag.
Based on Thursday's results, the Red Raiders sit tied with Arizona for the 12th and final Big 12 Tournament spot. The Wildcats defeated Oklahoma State 7-4 in Stillwater, and must win one more game than Tech over the season's final two.
The Red Raiders also sit just one game behind Kansas State for 11th place, as K-State fell 10-8 at UCF. Â
