The Red Raiders got home runs from Logan Hughes and Caden Ferraro to win
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Baseball used four runs in both the first and second inning to down DBU, 9-7, Tuesday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
After a scoreless first inning from starter Connor Mohan, Texas Tech (24-24) seized control of the game early, using a one-out double from senior Tracer Lopez and a pair of two-run home runs from Logan Hughes and Caden Ferraro to race out to a 4-0 lead.
Lopez's double was his team-leading 19th double and was the 40th of his career, as Lopez entered the season with just 21 doubles in his previous 163 games prior to this
season.
The homer for Hughes was his 14 of the season and 33rd career home run bringing the slugger to within three of cracking Tech's top-10 all-time. The blast came in his 100th career game as a Red Raider and traveled 366 feet.
Armed with the 2-0 lead, the Red Raiders plated Linkin Garcia who singled on the Ferrao two-run home run.
The blasts both came against DBU (28-21) starter Jared Schafer who allowed four hits and four runs in the frame to suffer his first loss of the season. He was previously 4-0.
Pitching with a lead for the first time, Mohan stranded a two-out double to fire the ever-important shutdown inning, setting the stage for the Red Raiders to do more damage at the plate. Mohan tossed the two scoreless innings on Tuesday and earned his first win of the season. He struck out two and allowed just one hit.
Facing a new pitcher, Tech found similar success in the second, placing the lead-off man on base, on a throwing error.
With two outs and shortstop Coleman Ryan on second, the Red Raiders got an RBI single from Lopez and a run-scoring 0-2 double at 110 MPH from outfielder later turned pitcher Connor Shouse.
Shouse who went 2-for-4 and scored twice, also tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first career save. He is now 10 for his last 15 at the plate with nine RBIs.
Up 6-0, with Shouse on second and Hughes on first base after a hit-by-pitch, the Red Raiders added two more runs on a 107 MPH double into the right-centerfield gap from
Garcia.
On top 8-0, the Red Raiders saw DBU strike for a singular run in the fourth on a solo home run from catcher Mac Rose. The blast was one of two on the night for Rose who entered the contest with just one longball in 60 at-bats.
Looking to answer the DBU tally, Tech used another RBI double, this time from Hughes to plate Shouse from first. The extra-base hit gave Tech a 9-1 lead.
The game remained 9-1 Tech until the sixth when a two out fielding error placed two runners on with two out for DBU centerfield Dylan Schlaegel.
Ahead in the count 3-1, Schlaegel launched a three-run home run off reliever Bryce Suiter that cut the Tech lead to 9-4. Suiter who allowed the three unearned runs on the Schlaegel homer struck out four.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, DBU drew even closer in the seventh, when another error, this time with one out, put two runners on with two outs for the catcher Rose who launched his second home run of the night to cut the Texas Tech lead to 9-7.
Up by just a pair, Tech reliever Logan Bevis won a 3-2, seven pitch battle with DBUs Chayton Krauss to keep his side up by a pair.
In the eighth, the Red Raiders turned to Shouse on the mound, and after walking the lead-off man and falling behind the next hitter Schlaegel 2-0, Shouse got the outfielder to fly out for the first out of the inning.
With the lead-off walk on first with one out, Shouse got picked up by his defense when catcher Matt Quintanar delivered a perfect short hop throw that Lopez was able to pick and slap a tag on DBUs Ben Tryon before he swiped second.
The caught stealing put two outs on the board, and helped Shouse escape the inning unscathed.
In the ninth, DBU used a two-out hit-by-pitch and a single to put the tying runs on base for Rose. Already with two home runs and four RBIs to his ledger on the night, Shouse got the catcher to swing and miss through three-straight sliders to record the 27th and final out of  game and start the Red Raiders final homestand with a victory.
