Tech closes out 8-3 win at Baylor Sunday
May 04, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders used a Logan Hughes game tying home run and a five run ninth to score seven unanswered
With the victory, Texas Tech (23-24, 7-17 Big 12) salvaged the weekend  series and avoided being swept in three-straight conference series.
After seeing a 1-0 lead erased in the bottom of the sixth, and trailing (3-1) for the first time all day, Tech flipped momentum on the mighty swing from Hughes. The blast, which traveled 375-feet soared over the right field wall and towards the banks of the Brazos River past the wall in right.
The homer was Hughes' 13th of the season, 32nd career blast and 17th career Big 12 home run.
Following the home run, Tech continued to ride the momentum as back-to-back singles and a sac-bunt from catcher Matt Quintanar placed runners on second and third and one man out, but Baylor's (25-22, 11-13 Big 12) Brayden Bergman came in for starter Ethan Calder and used a well-executed 6-3 putout at the plate and a full-count strikeout of Coleman Ryan to keep the game tied.
In his start, Calder tossed seven-plus innings of nine hit, three run ball and struck out four.
Back for his second inning of work after a 1-2-3 seventh, Tech senior Jonny Lowe ran into minor trouble as he saw Baylor with one out and nobody on put runners on second and third on a single and a double.
With the go-ahead run just 90 feet away, Lowe used a clutch strikeout and a nice defensive play from Linkin Garcia on a slow roller to third to escape the threat and keep the game tied heading to the ninth.
In the game's final frame, Tech used a lead-off single from Kyeler Thompson and a stolen base to place the go-ahead run in scoring position with nobody out for Tracer Lopez who worked a five-pitch walk.
With Thompson on second and Lopez on first, Baylor turned to reliever Grayson Murray, who one night after stranding the tying run at third base, allowed a 1-2 RBI single up the middle from Connor Shouse that gave Tech a 4-3 lead.
Shouse ran his weekend total to an impressive 8-for-11 (.727) and hit two home runs and drove in seven.
Again, facing runners on first and second and nobody out, Murray used back-to-back strikeouts to put the inning's first two outs on the board.
Just one out away from limiting the damage, Murray allowed a two-run double to right fielder Caden Ferraro and a two-run homer to Quintanar.
The two-run double and two-run blast gave Tech an 8-3 lead.
Quintanar's home run, his fifth of the season was especially sweet for the catcher as he was robbed of a two-run home run in the fourth when Baylor's Brady Janusek leapt high above the wall and brought back a baseball destined for the deck over the right field wall. The blast would have given Tech a 3-0 lead.
Just three outs from snapping a long nine-game Big 12 losing streak dating back to an April 11 win over No. 17 West Virginia, Texas Tech senior Logan Addison tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the Red Raiders seventh conference win of the season.
In the win, Tech got five-plus innings from junior Donovan Becerra who in his first career Big 12 start, allowed just three hits and one run.
Becerra took a 1-0 lead into the sixth before allowing a solo home run to Baylor's first baseman Tyce Armstrong on the 74th and final pitch of his outing.
With the victory, the Red Raiders also moved into a tie with Arizona for the 12th and final spot in the Big 12 Tournament at the end of the month. Texas Tech would have the tiebreaker over UofA if the two schools are tied following the conclusion of Big 12 play on May 16.
Both the Red Raiders and Wildcats have two series remaining and will be at home next weekend and on the road to close out Big 12 play. Tech faces BYU in Lubbock next Thursday-through-Saturday (May 7-9) while UofA plays host to Houston.
Tech will travel to Cincinnati to close the regular season (May 14-16) while Arizona ends its regular season in Stillwater at Oklahoma State.
