IRVING, Texas – After hitting .417 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored, Texas Tech's Logan Hughes was named the Big 12s Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Heating up at the right time, Hughes has now homered in four of his last five games and seven of his last 12, helping Tech go 4-1 in its last five games. Hughes has homered in all four of those wins, including in both the Red Raiders 2-1 win on Thursday night against BYU and the 15-11 win over the Cougars on Saturday.
Hughes started his week by going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and an RBI double in the Red Raiders 9-7 win over Dallas Baptist. Hughes reached base in three of his four trips to the plate in the win over DBU.
On Thursday night in the Red Raiders important 2-1 win over BYU, Hughes walked twice and hit the game-winning solo home run to help the Red Raiders to their first series opening win since Mar. 20 at Arizona.
After taking a rare 0-for-4 day with an RBI groundout, Hughes exploded in the rubber-game going 2-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBIs. Hughes drove in two runs with a go-ahead two-run homer and also singled home a pair after driving in the game's first run on a grounder to second.
With the two Big 12 longballs this weekend, Hughes recorded his 18th and 19th career conference only bombs, moving into a tie for second all-time with Jace Jung and Keith Ginter on the Red Raiders Big 12 Only home run list.
Hughes' three home runs also bring the first baseman/outfielder to within one long ball of tying Eric Guittierez for ninth all-time on the Red Raiders home run list at 36.
A potential first round pick in July's MLB Draft, Hughes is now hitting .368 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs. Hughes also has 15 doubles and a triple, meaning 32 of his 70 hits have gone for extra-bases. With just three games left in the regular season, Hughes is slashing .368/.496/.711.
Hughes and the Red Raiders close the regular season this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Cincinnati. First pitch from UC Baseball stadium is set for 6 p.m. (ET)/5 p.m. (CT) on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. (ET)/Noon (CT) on Saturday. Â
