No. 14 Sun Devils defeat Texas Tech

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 34 Texas Tech Lady Raiders forced two third sets in singles, but the No. 14 Arizona State Sun Devils defeated Tech by a 4-1 score on Friday night at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (14-8, 5-5 Big 12) earned a hard-fought doubles point to begin the match against Arizona State (16-4, 8-2 Big 12). At court two, the Sun Devils took the slight advantage after Emilija Tverijonaite and Aiya Nupbay beat Elena Daskalova and Mariia Hlahola, 6-2. Texas Tech evened the score when No. 55-ranked Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy took down Vivian Ovrootsky and Lily Taylor, 6-3.
It would be the duo of Ella Brownback and Andreea Lila who clinched the doubles point after defeating Zlata Bartanusz and Sarang Lim at court three. The Arizona State pair held the advantage for most of the match, taking a 4-1 lead and a 5-3 lead. However, the Lady Raiders fought back to tie things at 5-all, then won the next two games for the 7-5 victory.
The Sun Devils retook the momentum, winning five of six first sets in singles play. Arizona State got its first point of the match at court six after Lim defeated Brownback, 6-1, 6-3. Taylor gave the Devils their first lead of the contest after winning at court three over Polina Sleptsova, 7-6, 6-3. At court five, Bartanusz defeated Havana Kadi by a 6-2, 7-5 score for the 3-1 lead. Clinching the match was No. 26-ranked Tverijonaite at court one over Murphy in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
When the match was finished, Dmitrichenko was leading undefeated Ovrootsky at court two, 5-7, 6-2, 3-1, while Daskalova was trying to force a third set over Nupbay at court four, 5-7, 5-5.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are in Tucson, Ariz., to take on the Arizona Wildcats this Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
