Tech downs ACU 15-4 in run-rule fashion
April 01, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders got two home runs and four hits from Caden Ferraro to cruise to walk-off run-rule (8 Inn.) win
Exploding for 15 runs and 17 hits, Texas Tech (17-11) scored in every inning but the sixth and saw all nine starters record a hit and score a run. Â
In the win, the Red Raiders also got three hits apiece from shortstop Linkin Garcia and Matt Quintanar, as hitters five-through-nine in the order for Tech went a combined 13-for-20 (.650) with 10 runs scored and 7 RBIs. Â
Starting for the third-straight Tuesday, Freshman Adam Hayes tossed 5.2 innings of six-hit baseball allowing just one unearned run until a two-out sixth inning three-run home run from
ACUs (17-15) JT Thompson on the 95th and final pitch the Colorado native would throw. Hayes ultimately allowed four total runs (three earned) and moved to 2-0 on the season. He struck out three and for the second-straight start did not walk a batter.
Using the strong work from Hayes through the first two innings and the first of two Ferraro home runs, the Red Raiders raced out to an early 2-0 lead after two.
In the third, Hayes ran into his first jam of the night when three-straight singles plated an unearned run for the Wildcats and placed runners on the corners with one out for Grant Watkins.
Behind in the count 3-0 for the first time all night, Hayes worked it full at 3-2, before coaxing a lazy popup to center that was caught by Thompson and turned into an inning-ending double play, as the outfielder hosed ACUs Zandt Payne at the plate by four feet.
Armed with the momentum of the 8-2 double play, the Red Raiders used a two-run Logan Hughes home run as well as an RBI double and an RBI single from Ferraro and Quintanar to take a 6-1 lead.
Tech ultimately made it 7-1 when an ACU throwing error on a Jesse Rusinek stolen base attempt scored Quintanar from third.
With a big lead Hayes tossed a 1-2-3 fourth before stranding runners on first and second with an inning ending ground out to Tracer Lopez in the fifth. On the play, Lopez ranged far to his right and towards the middle of the diamond and with a dive snagged the ball and threw out ACUs Diego Cardenas at first.
The out proved to be key for Tech who still riding the momentum from the five run third and a singular run in the fourth, used a two-RBI double from Robin Villeneuve as well as a Lopez sac-fly to take an 11-1 lead.
Lopez, who recorded his 199th career hit (a two-RBI double) drove in four runs and walked in three official at-bats.
One out from recording six innings without an earned run allowed, Hayes allowed the Thompson long-ball that pulled ACU to within 11-4.
The Wildcats after chasing Hayes put two in scoring position for pinch-hitter Brady Ladusau who flied out to end the frame.
After a 1-2-3 seventh from reliever Bryce Suiter, Tech scored two more runs to take an 13-4 lead on a two-RBI double from Lopez that scored Villeneuve from second and the speedy Thompson from first.
Villeneuve who doubled twice on Tuesday, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Following a scoreless eighth inning from reliever Heeryun Han, the Red Raiders closed out their seventh run-rule home win of the season when a Garcia single set the stage for Ferraro to
hit his second home run of the night, a 436-foot, 108 MPH blast over the wall in left center.
In the win the Red Raiders also hung a pair of crooked numbers in the third (five runs) and the fifth (three runs). The 3+ run innings were the 40th and 41st of the season, bringing the Red Raiders to within one of the entire total a season ago (43).
