LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind five first set victories and a dominant doubles point, the 1-seeded and No. 12-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 4-0 sweep over 4-seeded Boston University in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the McLeod Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Texas Tech (23-2) won its 23rd doubles point of the season after taking two of three doubles matches against Boston University (13-9). In Tech's two doubles wins, the team only gave up one game. First, the duo of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy defeated Madison Liu and Blanka DeMicheli with a bagel, 6-0, at court two.
Over at court one, No. 8-ranked Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over Gabriella Mikaul and Uma Bakaityte. At court three, Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila were down 1-3 before claiming the next three games to take a 4-3 lead against Nina Gulbranson and Emily Zhao when it went unfinished.
Singles went out to a fast start for the Lady Raiders after they won five first sets over the Terriers. Sherif kept her undefeated streak in tact after downing Zhao in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-4. Zhao and Sherif went back-and-forth in the second set, tying at 2-2 until Sherif won the next three games for a 5-2 advantage. Zhao made it interesting – claiming the next two games before Sherif closed it out for the win.
At court three, Hlahola also got a straight-set victory when she overtook Liu by a 6-1, 6-3 score. Hlahola went up 3-0 in set one before winning three of the next four games for a 6-1 set. Then, she took a 3-1 lead in the second set before Liu made it 4-3. Hlahola would go on to win the next two games for a 6-3 set score to make it 3-0 in the match.
Clinching the match was junior Arina Oreshchenkova when she beat Rhea Rai at court six, 6-0, 6-4. After not giving up a game in the first set, Oreshchenkova and Rai would trade games in the second set to tie at 2-all. The Lady Raider then won three consecutive games for a 5-2 advantage before Rai fought back to make it 5-4. Oreshchenkova was able to earn the last game, stopping Rai's momentum to clinch the win and help Tech advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Up next, Texas Tech and No. 25 Stanford will face off on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center for a spot in the Sweet 16. Â Â
