Tech falls to No. 11 Arizona at the Big 12 Championships

WACO, Texas – The doubles team of Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud picked up a top-30 win, but the No. 75 Texas Tech Red Raiders ended their season in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals to the No. 11-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 4-0, on Friday evening at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Arizona (22-4) claimed the doubles point over Texas Tech (12-12) to begin the match. At court two, No. 62 Jay Friend and Eric Padgham defeated Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri, 6-2. The Red Raiders tied it up when Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak earned a ranked win over No. 29 Inaki Cabrera-Bello and Colton Smith at the top court.
Both doubles teams traded games until it was 2-2. In the following game, the Red Raiders saved two break points to take a 3-2 lead, then broke Arizona's serve for the 4-2 advantage. Arizona broke right back to make it 4-3, but the Red Raiders earned two-straight games for a 6-3 victory. At court three, Takeyasu Sekiguchi and Tyler Stewart took a 5-4 lead after breaking Casper Christensen and Filip Gustafsson's serve. However, the Arizona duo would win the next three games to clinch the doubles point and lead with a 7-5 victory.
Arizona jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after No. 4 Smith beat Pawlak at court one, 6-1, 6-3, then Alexander Rozin defeated Guglieri at court five by a 6-3, 6-4 score. The Wildcats clinched the 4-0 win after No. 5-ranked Friend overtook Arsic at court two, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Over at court three, freshman Ludovico Vaccari was leading No. 99 Zoran Ludoski, 6-4, 4-4, when it went unfinished. At court four, Stewart was ahead in the third set to Gustafsson, 6-3, 3-6, 3-1, when it was abandoned. Abboud also forced a second-set tiebreaker to Christensen at court six after falling in the first set.
The Red Raiders finished the season with a 12-12 overall record and a 2-5 record in Big 12 play.
